President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden arrived in Atlanta this
morning to attend the memorial service for former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, wife of former President Jimmy Carter, who served in office from 1977 to 1981. Mrs. Carter died on November 19 at home in Plains, Georgia, at 96.
The Biden’s sat in the front row at Glenn Memorial Church with President Carter, 99, who made a rare public appearance after being in hospice care for the past ten months. Seated with them were sons Chip, Jeff, Jack Carter, and their daughter, Amy.
Former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and former first ladies Melania Trump, Michelle Obama, and Laura Bush were among the attendees. Vice President Kamala Harris, second gentleman Doug Emhoff, Georgia’s U.S. senators, and Gov. Brian Kemp and his wife Marty paid their respects. The sanctuary was filled with over 1,000 people, including a significant presence of Secret Service agents. Although invited, former Presidents Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush did not attend.
The President did not give any remarks during the ceremony.
